Chapter Ten

‘So…’ Ruth whispered to the new Mrs Mason, when they were finally seated at the top table in the ‘Beresford Lodge Hotel’, waiting for the melon balls to arrive. ‘How come you never told me that Jo was so sexy?’

From the ‘Classic Cars’ group, Jo glanced up, bang on cue and realised that Ruth was talking about her. She felt herself blushing.

Ruth fluttered her fingers and smiled. Beside her, Natalie glowered.

‘Well, that’s probably because I hadn’t noticed!’

Natalie now had a husband seated securely beside her, and proud parents-in-law beaming happiness round the room, delighted that their son had shown some signs of moving into adulthood at last. But she still felt unsettled and vulnerable and dangerously close to tears. And the very last thing she needed was her best friend suddenly deciding to launch herself into some kind of treacherous liaison with Jo.

‘Mm… well, she’s very hot… Is she spoken for?’

‘I’ve no idea. She usually has some woman or other on her arm.’

Ruth deliberately ignored the tight tone. ‘No “plus one” today though?’

‘No, I don’t think she’s actually the “plus one” type.’

‘So she’s a “love ‘em and leave ‘em” kind of a gal?’

‘Something like that.’

It was meant to be a warning. But right now, it was exactly what Ruth wanted.

She figured that some no-holds-barred, no-strings-attached sex with Jo might be exactly what she needed to distract her from the pain of seeing Natalie so finally and irrevocably hitched to Ed.

She continued to watch Jo through the meal. She was laughing with the lads from Classic Cars and making sure their girlfriends and wives didn’t feel left out of the proceedings. She had a quiet, easy way of putting people at their ease that just didn’t fit with the selfish, manipulative monster Nat had painted so consistently to her over the months.

She was a proud big sister too. Ruth could see that as Andy mumbled his way through his Best Man speech, his notes fluttering anxiously in his hands.

‘First of all, I want to say sorry Ed…’ He turned to face his friend and employer. ‘You kind of got lumbered with me, didn’t you mate?’

He paused, red faced, to give Ed chance to make a token protest, then ambled on. ‘I know you’d have preferred our Jo. But she just wouldn’t have that sex change… It’s allus been the same with Jo… Totally selfish…’

Raucous laughter erupted from the Classic Cars table, while some of the older Mason clan looked bewildered.

‘And then I reckon you’d have preferred Bill, but he’s even shyer than I am, and wild horses wouldn’t have got him up here making a total plonker of himself like this. And Chad and Algie and Gary and Nigel… I bet the missus warned you they’d all be off their heads by now. And look… she was right!’

More raucous and slightly relieved laughter from the lads who’d got away….

At tables near the back of the room, where people couldn’t hear, one or two of the guests started to talk. Jo turned and glared at them to shut up.
